I'm Lindsay Mahaffey, and I am running for the Wake County Board of Education for District 8, which includes Cary, Apex, Holly Springs & Fuquay-Varina.

When my family and I moved across the country to North Carolina, we chose Apex & Wake County primarily because of its supportive, family friendly communities and its schools. After living and working as an educator in Seattle, WA; Buffalo NY; and abroad in France, I come to Wake County as a candidate with a broad perspective of education - having served communities with varying needs and resources. I earned my Masters in Education and would serve you not only with the perspective of an educator -- bringing my advanced knowledge of pedagogy, education policy; but also as the mother of three children, two of whom are currently enrolled in Wake County Public Schools. I have a vested interest in the success of our students, teachers and school community.

There is a great disconnect between education policy and what goes on in the classroom. As the only candidate with a background in education, I pledge to bridge that gap. This will include, working to streamline academic policies - to ease the policy burden on our teachers, and keep our students at the center of all that we do. As a mother, I have experienced the rapid growth of our community firsthand. In kindergarten, my eldest was placed in a class with no teacher. So many students had enrolled over the summer, a new class had to be created. We also struggled with transportation, and student assignment - after a move mid-year, put my two oldest girls in two different schools.

For the sake of our innovative, resource rich, and, growing county, we need to address these problems head on. Doing so will strengthen our community. Join me in this important conversation about the education of our children, and our future.
